The Tour de Yorkshire has taken to Barnsley’s rooftops thanks to a huge cycling-themed artwork painted by a local charity.
Creative Recovery, an artistic charity aiming to inspire community spirit, has been working on the completion of a huge mural on top of the old Barnsley Market multi-storey car park.
The gigantic painting measures a staggering 58 metres by 47 metres, covering the whole perimeter of the building.
The painting illustrates two cyclists whizzing through the town centre with the hashtag #BARNSLEYINGEAR written at the bottom.
On Thursday 19th April, Deadline Digital’s drone set off to capture the beautiful landscapes of Barnsley and the working progress of the £120m Glass Works. However, during the flight the pilot in command came across some beautiful artwork mid creation, ready for the Tour De Yorkshire.
Helen Boutle, an artist for the Art Recovery Group, said:
“The inspiration for it was about celebrating the fact that Tour de Yorkshire is coming to Barnsley. We’ve had short bits of the routes in the last few years but to have two starts, both the men’s and the women’s race, it’s absolutely phenomenal.”

On May 4th, the second leg of the race will start at Barnsley’s Town Hall at 9am and finish in Ilkley, 128 kilometres later.
The televised race will reach up to 180 countries which means that millions of people will be able to admire the piece of art as helicopters broadcast the sporting event live from above the town centre on the day.
To celebrate the event, the town will be action packed with entertainment for the public. This will include music, market stalls with a continental market and Star Wars themed entertainment which will involve the ‘May The Toys Be With You’ exhibition, one of the country’s finest collection of Star Wars memorabilia.
The people of Barnsley are excited to see that Tour de Yorkshire puts the town on the map as a charming, attractive tourism hotspot.
