A set of films translated into 14 different languages has been nominated for a prestigious award.
The Asthma Care project has been shortlisted in the category ‘the most impactful project addressing health inequalities’ at this year’s HSJ Partnership Awards.
Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust teamed up with video production experts Deadline Digital to create informative videos examining the barriers that prevent ethnic minority groups from accessing asthma care.
Respiratory Consultant, Dr Llinos Jones from Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust said:
“I’ve been working for years trying to address health inequalities for patients with asthma who struggle to read and write in English, and yet need to self-manage a chronic condition.
Alongside the Yorkshire & Humber AHSN, who helped me tender the bid, we have set about addressing some of the communication inequalities that contribute to poorer outcomes for those from minority ethnic backgrounds and those with learning difficulties. It’s a fantastic development to have secured funding which will go some way in helping us tackle those communication barriers and give people a better chance to adequately manage and understand their care.”

How Deadline Digital brought the idea to life
As experts in producing video content for public sector organisations, the Deadline team assigned two filming days to capture three different topics: ‘How to use your Peak Flow meter’, ‘Asthma medication during Ramadan’ and ‘Is your asthma under control?’
Each of the films explored some of the cultural barriers surrounding asthma as well as uncovering myths and misconceptions.
The videos were then translated from the English original into 14 languages, such as Punjabi, Mandarin and Romanian.
The multilingual videos will hopefully be a positive resource for asthma sufferers with literacy and language barriers. You can read more about how the videos came about.
